The NGO ERIS [Climate Stories] successfully hosted Slovakia’s first full-day professional training dedicated to climate storytelling for film, television, and animation professionals and students. The event, held in partnership with the International Film Festival One World (Jeden svet), marked a milestone in the country’s efforts to connect climate awareness with the power of culture and media.
Taking place at Kino Lumière in Bratislava, the training welcomed participants from 9:30 a.m. onwards for an intensive day of learning, reflection, and creative exchange.
Building the Bridge Between Climate and Culture
The program opened with an insightful keynote by Lucia Szabo, climate activist and co-founder of Klimatická Koalícia, who provided a clear and accessible introduction to the climate crisis. Her talk set the foundation for exploring how narrative forms can address environmental challenges and shape public imagination.
A Diverse Community of Creatives
The event brought together a dynamic group of students, filmmakers, producers, and creative and culture professionals. This diversity proved essential, creating a space where participants exchanged knowledge, reflected on industry responsibilities, and explored new strategies for integrating climate themes into audiovisual work.
Throughout the day, attendees examined how storytelling can communicate the realities of climate change and sustainability in ways that are emotionally engaging, impactful, and capable of inspiring action.
Strengthening Slovakia’s Climate Storytelling Landscape
This pioneering training signals growing momentum in Slovakia toward embedding climate awareness within the cultural sector. By empowering audiovisual creators with new tools, international best-practice and perspectives, ERIS [Climate Stories] aims to support long-term transformation in how climate issues are portrayed and understood.
?Program highlights:
- The hands-on workshop by Andrea Culková (CZ) allowed participants to understand the context of climate and social crises, and to develop and share impactful story concepts through practical exercises
- The lecture by Lucie Trémolières (FR) on green screen-writing included an introduction to green production practices, which are intricately tied together. Paired also with ample case studies, this allowed our participants to experience the international perspective and learn about industry best practice across Europe and worldwide
- The cross-sectoral attendance, together with the experts who led the day, created a fertile ground for networking and discussions, connecting creativity with sustainability
